Yellows Come First
Yellows come first.
On the bushes, mostly green.
The daisy called marguerite,
Lining the street.
And these in the back, Mexican birds-of-paradise
I have seen sour grass by the sea,
And spotted jonquil.
Not yet, daffodils.
Who will win the race? Those
On the hill or
Mustard in the fields.

Just the next day, in Dave’s patch,
Daffodils raise their heads to say: “Us”!
